We do not live longer in the mood of the sixties, seventies or eighties of the last century where output had to be always more, the price always less, and words like ‘limited natural resources’ or ‘environmental pollution’ were yet another bloody acronym for nonsense and anticapitalism.

Our planet becomes more overcrowded. Agricultural area available is shrinking worldwide. And desirous natural resources becoming not more over time.

Pure luxury. The lights of Dreipuls are a creation of excellent design and German craftsmanship.

What sounds like the apocalypse is an enormous challenge for a civilization making it from petrol lighting to LED within less than a hundred years – considering the fact that the thousands of years civilization before mankind had fire on torches and candles only to illuminate their being.

First designers and artists of mankind created during the day their weapons and tools from bones and stones to be able to provide for their maintenance. And during the night they designed the contemplation of their day-to-day doings by painting onto the bare cave walls.

Today, of course, we not dwell in caves any more. Our tools became more sophisticated. But what remained is the drive to design our environment.

The most of us have the privilege to live in a prosperous part of the world with a working market economy. On the downside, economically growth is essential for this system. Or as Nicola Jenkin from the consulting BestFoodForward put it straight: “If everyone on the planet lived the life of the average European, we’d need 3 planets.”

Since a couple of years think tanks and universities generate a lot of papers about sustainability as a contribution for our planet as a better place.

But what does sustainability mean, actually? And how does design fit into this?

The AREA light is a substructure light fixture controlled by hand motions.

According to Nicola Jenkin sustainability has following attributes:

  • An innovation reducing consumption
  • Has the capacity to endure
  • Represents the basic quality of life
  • Reduces impact on the planet
  • Fits into long-lived ecosystem
  • A product stewardship commitment

And where is the relation to design though? Basically, design is everywhere. Every product is designed – consciously or unconsciously. Design – from a pen through to a building – influences our awareness and subconsciously directs our way we feel, act and create an image of ourselves, our self-perception.

The reason we choose a certain design is how we want to be seen by others. Dictators and despots let always construct the same type of tremendous buildings with angular handwriting leaving a scary impression. Cathedrals were built to show the greatness of God. The bourgeoisie erected impressive domiciles to demonstrate their power in front of the aristocrats.

The design vocabulary speaks a very powerful language!

Apple made computers sexy through design. Montblanc revived the fountain pen and changed it into a stick symbolizing power. And DreipulS created an attractive concept for situational light eXPerience directed by motions and gestures, giving its owner one’s undivided attention even when the light is off state.

Beyond doubt, the products of DreipulS are luxury items. They show all aspects such objects in question must have: They are long-lasting, of superior quality, exclusive, created by excellent craftsmanship, authentic, of specified provenance, pure and definitely innovative. On top this superb designed lights are reduced to the maximum and expose undaunted their value. A value demonstrated not only by a strong brand but also timelessness, uniqueness and soul.

The AREA light is ideal for tall cupboard and as substructure. With a hand gesture you decide where the light spots are located.

Or as Jean-Noël Kapferer, professor at HTC Paris  puts it: “Real luxury is not aimed at cost reduction but at the creation of value, through rare and unique singularities, like no-delocalization. Luxury adds up elements of uniqueness like producing in its home country.”

DreipulS manufactures all parts of its products from the neighborhood around Dresden in Germany only. She uses the knowledge and experience of regional craftsmanship. This is how a lot of Michelin-stared chefs of top class restaurants work, too – using local products and produce and reducing it until there is nothing left as their uniqueness.

As we can observe: The design of DreipulS and sustainability converge. Both focus on rarity and beauty and pursue the same objectives. Of course, this has its monetary price. This is not everybody’s taste. But it’s not meant for everybody either. There is just one deviation from all other things in common: Design is mandatory for many and may override other priorities. But if the shoe fits, wear it. More information at DreipulS.
